Burglary Tips to help keep your family and home safe:
NEVER LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE UNLOCKED
Even when parked in the driveway. Do not leave garage door openers in the car since it can give criminals easy access to your home.
ALWAYS USE OUTDOOR LIGHTING
Install motion lights on the corners of your house. Keep the door lights on at all times. Ensure there are no dark or secluded areas where someone can hide or await your return.
ELIMINATE HIDING PLACES
Keep shrubs trimmed to smaller sizes and below the window level.
PREVENT THE 6-SECOND BREAK-IN
Remove the red string from your garage door track. Burglars can use a wire hanger to hook the string and easily open your garage door.
ALWAYS LOCK THE DOOR LEADING FROM THE GARAGE TO YOUR HOME
This should be done at all times, including throughout the day. Criminals often look for open garage doors to enter your home.
ENSURE THAT ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE CLOSED AND LOCKED BEFORE LEAVING
Install locks on gates or privacy fences. Keep all windows locked, even when they are opened a few inches for ventilation. Use locks on bikes, or store them in a locked garage.
DETER ENTRY THROUGH CHILDREN’S ROOMS
Plant thorny bushes outside kids’ bedroom windows.
PERFORM MONTHLY SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERY TESTS
You should also have a family evacuation plan in place.
AVOID OBVIOUS SIGNS OF AN EMPTY HOUSE
Stop mail and newspaper deliveries while you are away from home for more than a day or two.
